To Whom It May Concern,

I was hoping this could be accomplished through a private communication, but I could not find a posting for private contact on your site. I am writing to ask that you kindly remove from your website this article about me, Hans Shmidheiser. The incident in question was a terrible misunderstanding and is a gross misrepresentation of my character. I suffer from bipolar disorder, and what was reported was a manic episode. Since then, my psychiatrist has adjusted my medication and my mood has stabilized to normal. Please realize that your story, along with similar accounts of from other sites, whom I am also contacting, are the top hits in a web search of my name. This is naturally very detrimental to my private and professional life, and so far as I can see, it serves no positive social purpose. I am not a celebrity and disparaging me is of no interest to anyone. I was a graduate student at NYU, but I completed my PhD in 2009. Thus, the connection to NYU is irrelevant. I had been working in finance at the time of the incident, and while my boss and coworkers continued to support me and encouraged me to stay, I decided for a career change. I would add that while I was initially arrested, once it became clear that my behavior was due to my medical condition, all charges were dropped and I was hospitalized.

Please look at this from my perspective. This incident aside, I am a well-mannered individual. I have a PhD in math from NYU. I have won performance awards for my work. I have friends and family who care about me, and know I'm a good person. I'm not faulting you for reporting on the incident at the time, but I am trying to give you the bigger picture and asking for your help. I appreciate your time.

Sincerely,
Hans Shmidheiser
